Inspirational/Motivational Music

If you're studying, I would recommend non-vocal music. Recent research shows that even when the vocals are in a foreign language, they distract from your reading. As I write for a living, and on deadline, I'm familiar with listening to music while I concentrate on the task.

I'm assuming you're open to classical.

That said, I'd look for composers who are more upbeat. Much of the time this takes us back further as one ingredient in modern music is its tendency to be downbeat. Shotakovich comes to mind. I love his stuff, but not when I need motivation.

Debussy is pretty good at aiding concentration and most of his work is optimistic.

John Ireland's music might be obscure but it is nice to concentrate with.

Moving back in time, Beethoven is dramatic and certainly conveys a can-do spirit. Even though there are lyrics in his 9th, it is otherwise perfect, but so are the 4th, 5th and 6th symphonies and they are vocal-less.

Haydn is very upbeat and tuneful. Vivaldi works as well.

Lots of people like Bach for its energy, too.

Hope this helps.

Definately helps some. I do, indeed, listen to classical, and I have many of Beethoven's and Vivladi's work. I will look into John Ireland. Thanks.

i don't know what musical preferences you like besides what you've mentioned so far ie: classical, but i'd agree with the instrumental music versus vocal/words...however some can work under both, not sure which may suit you, but at any rate here's some that come to mind (they are not classical):

1. Sasha - Involver
2. Bill Laswell -
  1. a.) Final Oscillations
    b.) Broken Vessels
    c.) City of Light
    d.) Invisible Design
    e.) Mantra
f.) Bill Laswell & Miles Davis - Panthalassa
    g.) Mysteries of Creation
    h.) Sacred System
i.) Bill Laswell & Carlos Santana - Divine Light
    j.) Bill Laswell & M.J. Harris - Somnifix
    k.) Bill Laswell & Pete Namlook - Outland 2
    l.) Bill Laswell & Pete Namlook - Psychonavigation 3
m.) Bill Laswell, Pete Namlook & Schulze - Darkside of the Moog
n.) Bill Laswell & Tetsu Inoue - Cymatic Scan
3. Brian Eno & Harold Budd - The Plateaux Of Mirror
4. Avatars of Dub
5. Thievery Corporation
6. Kaya Project
7. Magic Sound Fabric
8. Richard Bone
9. Amon Tobin

lot of ambient/atmospheric sounds may help you out, that's what i mostly listed
