Although this thread's title uses the word impressions, it doesn't offer anything at all in the way of a review of the HD 580 in terms of sound. The percentage scale approach doesn't tell us much, and the idea of the HD 580 being reasonably close to the HD 600 and HD 650 in sound has been claimed all over the Internet for years (see HeadRoom's comments on the HD 580 for starters). If the main point is that the HD 580 is a great headphone at its price point, I'll buy that

Thanks to your review, I'll probably not have to invest on HD 650  I'm really glad with my upgraded 580 for half the price of the 650 !

Thats fine.. I'm just saying, when you start to upgrade you will start to notice the difference.. I thought my 595s were better then 650's..Till I started upgrading.. My 595's couldn't keep up.. To bad you don't live in my area, you could try out the 650's balanced.. Also the 580's balanced to compare & contrast..

A valid point. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to compare them with balanced cables/amps etc. That's an interesting premise though - while the 580 may be close to the 650 with (more or less) stock cables, the 650 may pull ahead significantly with a balanced rig and/or high-end amps.

Thanks for the impressions. The HD580 is a great value. Get the HD600 grill and it gets better... from what I've read anyway.

Yep, and it is possible to like the HD 580s with HD 600 grills better than the HD 650 depending upon what system you use behind it.

Thanks for the review very nice. Going to pull the trigger on these at Newegg for 155 bucks with shipping (1 day shipping to NY also , damn its friday) seems like a good deal. They are the 300 ohms version , that should not be a problem with my H5 amp correct ?

Why not get them for $139.99 w/free shipping from B&H? They're in New York, too

x2. The 580s are nice, but the 650s properly amped are leagues above.

HD580 is a great headphone for the price. after a few simple modifications they are on the same level as the HD600 if not better. ( HD600 grills, HD650 cable )

edit: The HD650 is a different driver it's been reported the differences is a more refined bass and overall more detail and quality.

Sorry, but I simply can't agree with that at all.

I'd agree with Rasmussen who says:

>edit: The HD650 is a different driver it's been reported the differences is a more refined bass and overall more detail and quality.<

I just sold 600's with Cardas. While quite nice, they simply aren't as refined as the 650's in all frequencies. The 650's do have a bit more pronounced bass, but IMO it is not out of proportion to the rest of the sound and is definitely smoother than the 580/600. Of course how much bass required is a matter of taste and the type of music you prefer.

That being said, the 580's if one is on a limited budget gives great value for the money. But if one has a few more bucks, or higher aspirations, I think one is better off just starting with the 650. Both will require better source and amping to get the most out of them, but the 650 definitely has a higher ceiling. Much higher if you spend MUCH more money.

I'll try to answer your question. I own the 580's and I heard he 650's. I found the 650's to be more refined, a bit more neutral. You really hear the bass hump on the 580's when you compare them to the 650's. I found that to be the major difference between the two phones. The highs and the mids are presented in a very similar way, although the mids seem cleaner on the 650's due to reduced bass hump. The 650's reproduce bass just as deeply and powerfully as the 580's, but they don't exaggerate it the way the 580's and 600's do.

You have to love hearing and sound... such a subjective experience.

If the HD580 is anything like the HD650, it will not synergize well with the H5 amp. The H5 is simply too warm for an already warm/dark sounding headphone. The HD595 on the other hand is supposed to shine on the H5.
