i put my pc in the pantry with a little hole to run all the wires. when im playing a game i keep the pantry door open for cooling video card. otherwise i just keep it closed and now i got a perfectly silent pc. lol.
I have been pursuing a quiet PC for many years now. Here's my input:
- 120mm fans where possible
- speed controllers on all fans (or 5V or 7V adapter cables)
- passive northbridge cooler
- isolated hard drives (reduces case vibration)
- quiet power supply (most aren't) (I currently use a Seasonic S12)
- large CPU heatsink with a large slow fan
- cooler running CPU (P4 run reasonably cool compared to equivalent AMD)
- a solid vibration free and noise insulated case (I currently use and recommend the Antec Solo)
Many 'quiet' fans use sleeve bearings. IMHE I have found that while they tend to have less 'whoosh' from the fan blades, these bearings can make high pitched squeals, which clearly defeats the quiet concept.
