Umm... tracy bonham and ani difranco are cool. though i admit i have no idea what "indie" means. to me it's like "alternative"... kind of vague.

love tracy bonham! never got into ani though.. maybe i should give her another listen.. thanks for the reminder!

yeah, "indie" is kind of an obscure term. to me, it essentially means independant (unsigned by a major label) (k records, kill rock stars, touch and go, up, etc. - as opposed to Atlantic, Columbia, Sony, etc). i guess its a sub category of alternative.

Julie Doiron (similar to Jolie Holland)
Regina Spektor (similar to Nellie McKay)
Neko Case (sounds even more like Patsy Cline than Jenny Lewis does)
A Girl Called Eddy
Cat Power
Metric
Feist
Azure Ray
Joanna Newsom

Boy/Girl Vocals:
Stars
Saturday Looks Good To Me
The Fiery Furnaces
Mates of State

Not indie but I have to mention her because she's my favorite female vocalist of all time:
Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays

Breeders, Low, The Delgados...Skunk Anansie for angry early-90s London punk...Patti Smith, of course...the Moldy Peaches if you can stand the twee factor...
