Hello all, I am currently using an Audioengine D1 to a Schiit Lyr2, with preamp out to my Audioengine A5+'s. I find the sound to be boxed in/limited. Should I replace my speakers or my DAC? If yes, any suggestions for speakers? I have a Schiit Gungnir DAC in mind, or the Marantz HD-DAC1. Any suggestions on DAC's either? Thanks.

I own A5+ and use them in my office. They're fed by a Modi, which is a relatively poor sounding piece. The sound is clear, open, detailed, and dynamic. The speakers are extremely forgiving, as I truly loathed the Modi's sound in a higher resolution system. Given your description of the sound, something is definitely amiss. First thing I'd try is removing the Lyr2 and feeding the A5+ from the D1. See if the sound improves. In essence, you have a preamp driving a preamp - that's one box too many. Let us know what happens.
