In-line volume controllers: sound quality?

Just stick with my conclusion in the last paragraph.

I just wanted to cover all the bases, because if I didn't test one aspect or possible application of these things then someone would call me on it and ask me why I didn't do "blah blah blah instead."

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I am also using a Sansa e280 but with UE-10Pros. I can't quite get the sound level low enough for comfortable listening.

Would one of these from M-Audio work? I want to avoid extra cable if possible. Thanks!

The one from Radio Shack is cheap and will be just fine for your intended use.

If you don't need a specific resistance with a very narrow tolerance, if you're not amplifying the signal after the resistor, if you're not running high current through it, if you're not concerned about heat dissipation or shielding, if the contacts are fine, then a resistor is a just a resistor.

An impedance adaptor works great if you know what impedance you need.
