what's the general consensus

are full cans superior to iems soundwise?

i am talking about at home, let's say in bed when there are no external disturbances

i personally prefer my ears to massaged by a large driver rather than a tiny iem driver,

Well if that's what you prefer, then you just answered your own question.

But in general, yes, headphones are generally better. You have to spend a lot on custom IEMs to surpass headphones, and if you're someone who values big air over accuracy, then no IEM will do no matter what the cost.

I only have experience with etys and Shures, and at the time I thought that they "dissappeared" but boy was I wrong. Going back to those, yeah it's the opposite of relaxing. It's actually painful. I wear foam earplugs though. I really need to treat myself to something custom sometime that will attenuate across the frequency range.

I actually prefer my im716s to my SR60s. Mind, the MSRP of the IEMS is twice as much as the Grados msrp....
