The RE0, RE-ZERO, Apple ADDIEMs and Etymotic HF3 are amazing sounding for the price.

Overall the JVC HA-FX40 is a great deal for $15! I think everyone should have one. It is very bright, however the brightness seems to tone down with use. It needs plenty of burn, and isn't good right out of the box. I wish they charged $5 more for it though, and used a thicker cord, strain reliefs on the buds, and a right angle plug.

The JVC HA-FX40 is said to sound very much like the JVC HAS500 as they both have carbon nantube technology.I haven't heard the HAS500 yet. If you like the HAS500 you will probably also like the HA-FX40.

Oh, customs duties? I guess you can't avoid that. Many countries have that. With some countries import duties  can even double the price or more.

Monoprice is known to make some budget headphone/earphone which's quality can compete with much more expensive ones

BTW, just a head-ups: HA-FX40 is v-shaped, not neutral, which means they have bass and treble boost, while the mid (especially lower mid) is recessed.
