You must remember too that the reason that the Sony has no noise out of its headphone out is that it has only a 5mw output versus ipod at 30mw. Anything with that little amping will be virtually noiseless unless you have like 3omh iems or something. Quote:

I understand this no noise argument of HD amps in the Sony/Sharp HD and Auvi units, but they with all of their marketting about low noise floor still if you check out the specs ... the s/n ratio is at best 86 whereas ipod headphone out is 90 on most models. It is not the HD amp being better, it is that it is powerless thus no current to disturb the sound, or to add power to nice headphones.
