in a home setup, to what sort of priced DAC's does the iMod compare to?

assume All songs the same, played through iTunes to a dac, to the amp/speakers

v.s

Same songs (same bitrate, everything), iMod out to amp/speakers?

What sort of DAC does the imod compare to? A BenchMark USB ($1275)? MIcroDAC ($299)??

While I haven't heard the iMod, it keeps the stock DAC on the 4g iPod (Wolfson WM8975). I don't think this DAC can compete much with the CS4398 based MicroDAC, nor come anywhere close to the Benchmark. But it shouldn't compete with either, the iPod/iMod is still about max battery life and portability. The MicroDAC stretches the idea of portability and battery life and the Benchmark doesn't want any part of portability.

The iMod is more about cleaning the signal path of cheaper parts and upgrading the opamps. It also bypasses the headphone amp and you only get a line output.
