I recently read a review comparing the Hifiman 801 to the imod. One thing I found very interesting was that the Hifiman could be used on the go without an amp and the sound quality was more than fine. What would happen if i plugged headphones directly through the line out of an imod via a female 3.5mm jack (as shown below)? What would it sound like without an amp? Would something happen to my headphones/ipod? Would there be any loss in functionality?

I don't think anyone has seriously tried this because the purpose of doing the iMod in the first place is to send a fixed line out signal to the amp, like what you get from a home audio component. By "fixed," I mean there's no potentiometer, analog or digital, limiting the voltage output. So either you blow your ears, or you have an inline volume control, which isn't usually the best preamp. Even a transformer-less passive preamp may be transparent but I don't think an inline limiter can be as effective as a Pass Labs Attenutator.
