I'm not quite sure what the forum is doing, but if I try and post a somewhat large size photo it is resized.
I'm not sure what the resize is dependent on resolution size or whatnot.
 
Either way, it's frustrating.  There are times when a large photo is simply what is required.  Linking to a photo does not accomplish the same thing.

Yeah, I too have noticed and find it to be really annoying.
I inserted a picture of 1024x682 and for some reason the forum software resize the picture to 724x483. Why?

I would think because large images take a lot of bandwidth and site loads slow for some people. If you wan't to submit a full size image then paste the link from where the image is uploaded instead of embedding it.
