Even if Vista isn't the problem, you'd most likely be better off without it anyway.
It almost seems like Microsoft didn't even try to make Vista good. More like they just hammered a bunch of stuff together, wiped away the blood, and sprinkled a little glitter on top. I firmly believe that they're capable of much more. Out of everybody I personally know who has used Vista, all but one of them (a total of about 10 people) have had some really annoying, nagging problems that they couldn't get rid of. Even updates didn't work, at least not consistently. The one person who didn't have problems is a Microsoft fanboy, so he doesn't really count anyway. I'm guessing he just lied.
I'd highly recommend upgrading to Windows XP SP2.
