So I'm having issue with the RCA out on the back. I feed it to stereo receiver to listen on speaker, but when I first boot on the computer, nothing comes on right speaker. Headphone out is fine, just right channel on RCA. I have to unplug and plug back into work. Anyone having similar issue?

Have you tried other RCA cables or swapping channels, just to make sure that it's the ZEN at fault and nothing else?

This thread and the "first impressions" thread is a very interesting read. I brought the Senn HD58X a few weeks ago and been powering them straight off my 2012 iMac and they sound great. I've been considering buying the Zen DAC to get the most of of the 58X. From what i've read they pair quite nicely. I also just got Tidal HiFi and wouldn't mind trying some MQA.

hi i did try this, but returned it as the single ended headphone out was not really loud enough with my oppo pm3 before it seemed to run out of stream and seemed to distort from my laptop, interestingly using my desktop it was fine, any comments (all my headphones/iems are single ended)

Hi everyone,

Received it after trying out the Hip-dac, which was ultimately less suited to my needs than the Zen, the Zen sounds just great and even enhances my sound with lower tier cans such as the MDR-7506.
Quick question, when I turn on the sound volume wheel, I hear some low cracking in my headphones and some white noise (white noise only when nothing is playing) when volume is put up to the maximum - has anyone else noticed this? (I do not charge my laptop simultaneously)

Thank you.

Hmm, I don't have those Oppos, but accordingly to our headphone calculator:

...you should be getting deafening volume level.

Looks right as far as diameter goes.

thank you - i will rethink this

Even on sngle ended?

Interesting, i must admit that foobar used with replaygain does reduce the output level by some db i noticed that the reduction on some tracks is as much as 6db so this might be the issue for me, i guess i could increase the preamp but have not done so as when i tried this using foobar mobile on my fiio x7 it tended to introduce some spurious noises.

Maybe i will try the zen again as it seems the perfect solution otherwise as it is independant of a battery and i am struggling to find a usb powered dac/amp of this type.

Oppo PM3 connected to unbalanced ZEN DAC would get 129dB. And yes, some digital tracks are far quieter than others, so this has an impact as well.
