On the listen/measure switch I have a hard time of finding any meaningful sound difference. Also someone earlier in the thread mentioned that their unit had dings on it out of the box- mine also had two noticeable dings on it out of the box.
I gave up trying to photograph them because of the very reflective surface. The alloy they used is really soft so I can see it getting dinged up very easy. It’s my only qualm ( the finish ) with this little gem- well that and the bug where you have to reset BT or power cycle to get sound again.
Would love to get LDAC, if they could throw that in with the bug fix that would be dandy.
Also I could see a real case for this thing as being a real plus- maybe like a slide in tube/sleeve type where only the front and back are exposed.
Sound wise they nailed it, the more I listen the more I appreciate it. Rich and vibrant with oodles of detail and a nice 3D ish stage. Not the widest but the sense of space/ depth is really well done. Cymbals and piano are my go to’s for testing timbre and xdsd handles them with proper attack and decay and they sound just right. Smooth with a hint of warmth but very dynamic and engaging.
I’m finding it hard to just listen to my daps without xdsd. They sound less dynamic and ‘flat’ for lack of a better word. It just goes to show it’s all about implementation and not so much about using the latest dac and numbers.
Oh, and I love the ifi OTA USB C cable, very nice and flexible and a very good price at just 15 ducketts imo.
Some Arkenstone with morning java
Edit: I just realized probably few of you know who David Arkenstone is, well he’s a new age ‘cough’ multi instrumentalist that produces his own stuff. I love it because it’s almost all instrumental and recorded under the Narada label which does a great job mastering their recordings. You get to hear many, many types of instruments on an Arkenstone record.
I also like Waveform Records for their great mastering and trippy material.
