iFi Audio Micro iTube2 Buffer

Tube rolling iTube will void warranty, and there is very little room inside due to that black connector at tube tip, so that tubes taller than 5670/2C51 such as 6385/6n3p will not fit. I do wish iFi would move that black connector up a few milimeters.

Thanks

The same cherry-picked JAN GE5670 in both.

As @Jon L nicely showcased, tubes can be removed. WE396A would be what I'd consider an upgrade over GE5670.
@iFi audio another iTube Buffer specifically made for tube rolling will be awesome. Maybe call it the pro iTube :)

The odds for such a specialist device are rather slim. An amp with tubes easy to roll and able to work as a buffer is more like it, but I'm just throwing out ideas :D

We never say never, you know

Haha. Already have one, but the effects of the iFi iTube is substantial when I add it. I suppose moreso to a solid state amp. If the "pro iTube" would be sold at a price much lower than a regular tube preamp or buffer, I think it will be a huge success. Maybe put the same GE5670 tube, but configured to be switchable to accept other tubes closer to the GE5670 but of a different type. Don't know if 12AX7 and 12AU7 are close, but if popular tubes like these can be rolled, that will be awesome. I can see that JAN GE 12AX7WA tubes and GE 5814A/12AU7A are still relatively cheap and aplenty :). Or damn it, just make a tube preamp now

Never thought it could be a preamp.

It is a preamp, you can use it in-between a DAC and power amp to regulate the latter and never use any headphones. However, Pro iCAN can't work as a buffer, its volume control is always engaged.

Yes that’s my understanding too. Just saying I didn’t realize until now that it could be a preamp. But still, a Pro iTube buffer I like

Make it in black label edition too and I am for it. Indeed Pro iCan is very close as an upgrade to iTube2. The thing is I am using iTube2 as a buffer exclusively. And I still love small factor size of it. This does not help with tube rolling option but makes it really great fit on every desk, especially with iRack.

I honestly don't know whether the Pro range will get BL updates. We'd have to land upgrades meaningful enough to result in substantial sound quality spike, and with Pro machines it's not that easy to do given their price points and functionality :)

But as always, we never say never :sunglasses:

Hello @iFi audio. What is iFi audio's sound impression or intent/design on the sound character on the SET, Classic Tube and Push-Pull Tube settings?

Cheers
