Let's hope this thread succeeds! Any ways, this thread already assumes that you have your "one headphone/amp combo" on and, of course, gets down to the important stuff! MUSIC!

Well, my question would be, "What is the one album you would take on a tropical island if you could only have one CD?", but, I decided to try to make it a little more interesting than that.... give you a little more leeway. Instead, I ask, "what album or CD would you take *from each genre* to a tropical island?" So, you can say as many genres as you want, the more the merrier, and you can split it into (relatively sane, please) subgenre's too!

I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Basically, I ask this as a way of trying to figure out a broad category of music... for one who does not know what genre they really might like yet, so they can pick up stuff from each genre, narrow it down a bunch! *coughMallowcough*.

Oh my, I'm not sure if I'll expand anyone's musical horizons, I got very sick and tired of trying to expand my own not so long ago. but I like the question, so here's an attempt.

I don't cut my music collection into slices, and use "pop" to encompass all your alt-rock, rock, alt-pop, electornic pop and such... so I'll make up subgenres for this post.

Acoustic stuff: Kings of Convenience - Quiet is the new loud
http://www.kingsofconvenience.com

Soul/Jazz-pop: Workshy - Clear
http://www.homdrum.no/workshy/index.html

Britpop: Matthew Jay - Draw
http://www.matthewjay.com

R&B/eye-opener: Lewis Taylor - Lewis II
http://www.lewistaylormusic.com

Country-esque pop(?): k.d. lang - All you can eat

Something from this moment in time: Beady Belle - Home
http://www.beadybelle.com
(Jazz/electronica)

Music made on $15000 equipment: Binocular
http://www.maverick.com/binocular/

Hrmm, 7 is a good place to stop, before knowledgeable folks chime in and say, "xxx is the real master of yyy, I suggest you go straight to the source". Happy listening!

the first thing that popped into my head when you asked was this:

beethoven: violin concerto; menuhin on violin, furtwangler conducting. sorry if the spelling is off.

the recording is old and in mono, but i can't imagine living without it. either that or beethoven's 9th recording from the seventies with karl bohm conducting the vienna phil.

i'm like that kid from a clockwork orange, i have to have my ludwig van.

Ooh, I get to take a lot

Progressive Metal: Liquid Tension Experiment 2
Yay for Pertucci! Yay for Levin! Yay for Portnoy!

Power Metal: Blind Guardian - And then there was Silence
Yes, the single, yes, it is that good

Industrial Metal - Rammstein - Herzeleid
When I need a driving guitar + synth sound, nothing beats Rammstein

Speed Metal/Thrash - Metallica - Master of Puppets
A classic

Space Rock - Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire
Trippy and relaxing, and fun too!

Irish Folk/Rock/Metal - Flogging Molly - Swagger
The Irish are great!

Black Metal: Opeth - Still Life
White Cluster is such a good song, I's take this over BlackWater Park

New Age - Enya - A Day Without Rain
la la la

Jazz - Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
A must have, for anyone, period

Solo bass - Victor Wooten - Show of Hands
A ture bass virtuoso

Goa/Trance - Astral Projection - Another world
When it is time to zone out...

Classical: Holst - The Planets
The beauty, the grandeur, the delicacy!

Game Music: Final Fantasy 6 soundtrack, orchestrated
Best game soundtrack ever, and I want the whole thing done up, not just 10-15 songs from it. The music in this game is incredible.

Electronica - The Orb - Middle of Nowhere
Way out is such an interesting mishmash of dissonance, counterpoint, and it is fun to listen to
smily_headphones1.gif

Acapella Moxy Fruvous - Bargainville
Once I was the king of spain...

Celtic - Loreena McKennit - The Visit
My favorite female singer also sings beautiful music

EBM/Industrial - Wumpscut - Down Where We Belong
Thorns. Yay!

Ambient - The orb - Orbus Terrarum
Odd, organic sounding technoey ambient music

Synth-pop - Goldfrapp - Utopia, yes, the single, also a track in 96k mp3 (Don't ask me why, but I like it a LOT in the crappy mp3, it just adds to the feel of the song so much for me, again don't ask me why) If that dosen't count as Synth-pop, then VNV Nation - Empires

Neo-Classical - The Great Kat - Beethoven on Speed
Psychotic dominatrix-woman is also an extremely talented guitarist, and violinist. Terrible singing voice though

Tabla music - Tabla Beat Science - Tala Matrix
Tablas are cool!

Experimental - Blue Man Group - Audio
BMG is cool!

Symphonic Metal - Therion - Deggial
Via Nocturne is one of the best written songs, period

Move Soundtrack - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Horner at his best, it has that Star Trek feel to it, and sometimes I want that

Southern Rock/Fusion - Aquarium Rescue Unit - In a Perfect World
Imagine Dave Matthews, combine with Blues Traveller and Spyro Gyra, and there you have them. Without the fiddle.

Did I have enough excuses for genres of music?

Xevion,

I think you'll find that Orbital did The Middle of Nowhere, not The Orb. Good choice though.

I think that if I could only pick one album, it would be Shpongle's Tales of the Inexpressible, as they combine so many different styles of music, sometimes within just one song that it completely blew my mind the first time I listened to it. Such a perfect album.
