I have the UE 3s coming to me in the mail and I have read a bunch of stuff about how the cord on them are super short. If I wanted to get something to extend the cord would I be able to or would doing something like that completely ruin the point of having good quality earphones?

Not at all, get an extension. If you make the cord 20 feet long or something ridiculous then you may have some concerns. this is my opinion of course, I don't want the cable nuts from either side running amuck.
