I think its just that the sound is literally in your head. so the soundstage is very compressed, nothing will ever sound very distant which is what gives full size phones and speakers a lot of their appeal.

I have compared my HD650's with my brand new shiny MylarThree's and they sound quite similar in a lot of ways. Soundstage-wise no IEM comes close to the HD650 though. At a price of 1/9 of the HD650 I don't mind
