My friend's SE530 recently broke (cable) in only a few months and apparently this is a common issue...

Is there any $400 budget IEM with a VERY strong cable? He hates the comfort of UEs.

The Sennhesier IE series have very good cables, I own the IE7 and it's very sturdy, should say the IE8 would be the same, seeing as that's the more likely model that your friend would go for considering budget.

Maybe get customs w/removable cable? That way you get the best possibly comfort and and removable cable.

Westone and the Sennheiser IE series use very good cables. Check out the Westone 3 or UM3X and the Sennheiser IE8 or IE7.

I can advise you not getting an Ultimate Ears pair of iems. I have heard Sennheiser and Westone have very good cables.
