I'm going to be getting my hands on a pair of bone-stock K340 and will be doing the full raft of mods with help from everyones friend philodox. He said that we should perhaps document it, as K340 mod info is all over the place on these forums, and tough to find. I could document w/pictures all the different mods that are being done, if there is interest in something like that.

Brilliant idea. The K340 is one of the most modded phones out there and we really should formally document all the possible mods. I have recently started my modding and should hopefully have the recable done tonight! I'll start off with a list of mods that we can further detail

Tweaking amount of cotton damping
Screen Mod
Taping up the back
The next few are all variations of recabling:
The recable itself (copper, SPC, silver)
Bypassing the PCB for the dynamic driver
Changing from single entry to dual entry

That's what I've got for now. If there are any others, please post them and then we will go into more detail soon.

We'll go all out, never fear.

We should probably invite a certain mad K340 scientist that has not been seen on here in a while as well... you know who I mean.

I would love this! I've been sitting on an unmodded pair of K340's now for quite some time. I had big plans for them at first but school got in the way, but now that it's winter break I can finally get to work

Anyway, this would be greatly appreciated, and while I'm fairly sure you're not going to be doing it, I know someone here has replaced the headband railing on their K340's (I think with K501's?), but that would be nice too as they need to be replaced as well. I guess I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

I've been in and out of my K340s a lot this past week. Blu Tack, taped up holes with two small holes in the tape and cotton in the holes, sections of bamboo blu tacked to the inside of the housing. Finally I kind of pulled some wires out of their solder, so I'll be correcting that little boo boo tonight or tomorrow. Where I have the bamboo now (wish I had some pictures) I would love love love to have a full ring of decent wood (you know, not bamboo) to affix to the inside of the housing. Anyone who's been inside will probably know where I have in mind to place this ring (there are two spots right next to each other actually). There's a guy named Speedy Dan (local to me) who does exotic woodwork, and I may be knocking on his barn door soon.

But yeah, I would love to follow a definitive K340 modding thread.

Oh I'll be doing it, if I can find someone in the US to grab some pads/headband for me

Contact AKG USA, the K501 fits the K340 with a minor mod (hole) and IMO looks better than the original K340 headband.

This should be fun.

Redleader and a friend of his are coming over this afternoon to have a listen to my pair, and I think he already has his own pair on its way to him.

Don't worry, we are still planning on doing it... just waiting on the parts to come in. It is taking longer than we expected.

I asked a week ago in the KT88 modding thread about the possibility of replacing the stock plastic enclosures with self-made wooden ones, but didn't get much of a response, so I figured I'd ask in this part of the forum if anyone had any insights. I just want to know whether or not it would be worth the attempt. And to figure this out, I'd like to know what kinds of woodworking tools I would need, what kind of wood is easy to work with that has good sonic properties, how to make the backing as thin (and lightweight) as possible without making it weak, possible differences in shapes of backing to direct the backwave in a certain direction, how much of a hole, if any, would be best, how to best connect it to the outer plates with the AKG logo on it while maintaining hinge functionality, etc. Thanks in advance.

When I asked Larry [headphile] about this he said that the special tools required would make this VERY cost prohibitive.
