Totally agree on this that's why I bought a DX260 for this purpose. Not much other DAPs have Coax out like Ibasso. No, coaxial cable cannot play DSD. Only PCM 16/44.1-24/192. But...it sounds significantly better than USB.

What's interesting though is that AFAIK D16 is converting and upsampling incoming PCM to DSD format by design.
As I am exckusively streaming and only having flac files otherwise I cannot comment on the audible difference vs playing native DSD

Are you sure it's DSD internally? From the specs I know it's 1bit 49MHz, but no clue wether or not that is exactly DSD...What's interesting though is that AFAIK D16 is converting and upsampling incoming PCM to DSD format by design.

From all I know since reading this thread and the reviews it's Ibasso's own FGPA converting to DSD in a similar way as Cayin is doing with N7Are you sure it's DSD internally? From the specs I know it's 1bit 49MHz, but no clue wether or not that is exactly DSD...

All digital music have to be processed and at the final processing phase, they are all 1 bit DSD.From all I know since reading this thread and the reviews it's Ibasso's own FGPA converting to DSD in a similar way as Cayin is doing with N7
Now, this 1 bit DSD will have to go through Pass filters (Low/High) to become analogus signals.
The differences in the D16 is that it has 16 elements, the Pulses Width Modulator to compiling PCM into that DSD. In the while other flagship chips such as 9038Pro Sabres or AKM 4499EX whatever are using only 4 or 8 Elements something like that.
Additionally, the D16 is discretely built with SMD components and not Silicon Waffer as th other IC flagships. There are pros and cons to being an IC vs discrete design, but the D16 also tackled and defeated the cons out of the discrete design by using FIR filter together woth 16 elements. You can read more Into it by googling if interested.
In the ends, the D16 is a very innovative design, while it may be similar to those of Cayin ... but it has better implementations and architects. Together with being a dedicated DAC itself, the D16 performs like nothing else out there in the Digital to Analog Conversion I have ever heard....portable/desktop alike.
I know a lot of people judging a piece of equipment by it MSRP, and that if it is dirt cheap, it isn't meant to be good. This mindset is why we are having such a dumb marketing in the hobby where a cable can cost thousands...and deemed worthy still.
One thing I can say for sure is that if you are an experienced audiophile with your own references, you will find the D16 to be an amazing device for it price...possibly even too cheap.

Additionally and at last I found out the reason why I prefer COAX and PCM feeding the D16 as my preferences. That is because Ibasso has an amazing FIR filter during it Digital Signal Processing which are amazingly integrated and engineered into the D16 as a whole. The informations, errors are not aggressively corrected as other programs or topologies from other DAC IC or DAC overall. But by also using 16 Elements, the errors self correcting itself, which gives the analogies vibes like no others.
Remember this, using DSD files is using other converters and not your D16 or the DAC you hooked onto. What you are essentially using is just the interface to conduct the DSD signals and the filters phase at the analog line out.
Using PCM is where you are using your DAC from the beginning to the end chain, and the D16 Aces everything

Sadly, those who buy by price are missing a purchase of the decade with the D16. I have now compared it to some very expensive das and it blew me away that in so many areas it bettered them and this is ridiculous when you consider how much the others cost and I'm not gonna go into names and so on, but they are excellent sounding dacs, but the rise time on the D 16 is astonishing in comparison. Stage size is no smaller with height and layering often is a little bit better on the 16. If people actually heard the D16 I think that it also would have sold in the thousands by now. I have no idea how many they have sold, but I would bet it is nowhere near that number.Additionally and at last I found out the reason why I prefer COAX and PCM feeding the D16 as my preferences. This is a pocketable DAC, big pocket, with a multiple battery supply that competes with the best there is in the market.

I'm waiting on the slight hope that the next MAX uses D16 as its basis for its DAC.

Possibly going to be a thingI'm waiting on the slight hope that the next MAX uses D16 as its basis for its DAC.

That seems like Ibasso can just integrate the 1 bit dsd into a processor just fine. The question then would be...
.
.
.
How much should an innovative flagship from Ibasso cost? The D16 is hardly moving, and so is the latest Max
I think Ibasso products are amazing, but the brand PR and marketing needs some boosts
Anyways, it would be very interesting to see what Ibasso may come up with for sure

Maybe you compare it with DACs from Cen.Grand? I'm looking for a DAC for desktop listening (I already have a d16)Sadly, those who buy by price are missing a purchase of the decade with the D16.
