Has anyone compared the SQ between these two? I've always used pcdp's, mostly sony's, and am completely satisfied, but now I'm thinking of trying an X5L. Does the X5L using FLAC sound as good as Sony pcdp's?

FLAC is FLAC. It depends on the quality of the output hardware.

No. The X5 sounds steely and compressed to me, and suffers from significant bass roll-off (feels like I'm missing almost 10% of the frequency range). Every pcdp I've tried sounded better than the X5, including a $30 GPX from Sears. This is judged from the headphone-out, but the X5's line-out has a whole other set of issues.
