I'm really tempted to add one to my collection, especially since I can get one off a friend for a good price.

However, I've never owned or heard one, so what are they like?

Rockbox is already a big tick, as is line-out (There is line-out via the pack right?).

Rockbox is great on the X5L. I get 25+ hours with mine. Great sounding headphone out too.

It may be a real line out, though badly implemented. I guess there are documented tests that verify a large amount of bass rolloff, though I have never bothered to look them up myself.

Yes, absolutely.

I did that for over a year and it held it's own with any lineout device I compared it to.

IMO, the X5L is a dead heat with the H3xx and H1xx players. It has a better headphone out, nice size and a decent screen/GUI. The only reason I sold mine is that I decided to pursue the offboard DAC option using the optical from my H140.

Whats the sound like compared to the H320?

IMO...better. I thought the X5 had a slightly more well rounded sound.

In truth, they're so close it's splitting hairs if you're looking for a Lineout source.....but regarding the headphone outs, the X5 is much better to my ears.

The problem for me is that a refurb 80GB Classic is cheaper than the brand new X5 I'm looking at.

Hmm, hopefully rockbox will eventually be ported to the classic, but it doesn't look likely at the moment. From a financial POV, the classic seems a better bet, but the iAudio has "collectible" status I guess.

The choice essentially comes down to Stellar sound quality and rockbox VS True Line out, MUCH higher capacity, but no FLAC support and I hate iTunes......

I could get my 5G upgraded and DIYmoded, but a) I don't feel confident working on iPods and b) I hate being stuck with just the one LOD.

Honestly I'd just Rockbox your ipod or your iRiver (if you haven't already) and just be done with it.

Or if you need the capacity, look out for a 5g 80gb.
