Has anyone attempted or seen successfully completed a hard drive upgrade to this player? 20 or even 30 gb are not enough.........so:

what size/type of HD is in this thing and can we replace it with a 60/80/or100 GB harddrive?

Don't think so.. at least not yet.

I really don't see why you couldn't put a single platter 30GB drive into one of the 20GB players. But currently everything larger than 30GB is a dual platter hard drive which is about 4-5mm larger, so they would not fit. I have heard rumors that a 40GB single platter will be coming out soon, but I doubt you will see anything larger than that for a while.
