Update:
I have AKG K701's coming in today.
A pair of Beyerdynamic DT990's coming tommorrow.
My Heed CanAmp will be here Tuesday.
I will be giving the AKG's and the Beyer 990's a two week break-in period, and the Heed a slightly shorter break-in before I start my comparison.
So, in a couple of weeks from now I will be using the Heed to compare the following headphones:
1. AKG K701's
2. Beyerdynamic DT880's
3. Beyerdynamic DT990's
4. Sennheiser HD600's
5. Sennheiser HD650's
I will be using the stock cables on the Sennheisers in order for the comparison to be fair.

Thanks Morph 201! You rock too!
I will be using a Music Hall cd25.2 cd player as a source...this has to be one of the most detailed and neutral CD players I have ever heard for the price!
I haven't quite decided what interconnects to use yet.
Does anyone have any ideas for relatively inexpensive interconnects to use to bring out the best of the 'phones and the Heed?
In another note:
WOW, my DT880's are beginning to sound truly awesome!
They are approaching 200 hours of burn-in, and have truly TRANSFORMED!
And, this is driving them with my Creek OBH-11SE amp!
The Beyer 880's don't even sound like the same headphones at all now.
Burn-in is NOT A MYTH, IMHO.
They went from bright, veiled, piercing, sibilant, shrill, thin, and lacking bass to GREAT headphones!
They now sound extremely well balanced, lively, open, and they actually have a great low end, believe it or not!
The bass and the treble have made TREMENDOUS strides over the last couple of days.
My Sennheisers and AKG's are in for some really tough competition!

Audioquest has some pretty decent ICs... but that may be the tricky part... Some people think K701s and DT880s might benefit from a copper IC, which might help to produce a warm tone, and I'm assuming Senns would be better contrasted by silver?

Nice~

I might suggest the BlueJeans Cabels LC-1 interconnects as being fairly priced , neutral sounding and well made to even stand up to frequent component changes for longivitys sake. They mail out exceedingly fast prioity mail.

I do like to order a bit longer lengths (my couple of pairs are 6 foot and a 3ft pair) and then coil them with velcro (comes included) for future utility...

Slight savings in shipping by doubling the order the first time.

Hope this helps~

Good luck~

I have posted my initial impressions of these cans in my Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG poll thread.

Ok,
I have tried 3 different headphone amps, various interconnects, a new Onkyo DX-7555 Audiophile Grade CD player, and have extensively burned in all of my headphones, amps, interconnects, the Cardas and Equinox Sennheiser replacement cables and have come to some new conclusions:
For overall BALANCE, detail, smoothness, and timbre, using the STOCK cables on all the headphones, and averaging the sound of all of my CD players, amps, and interconnects together, here are my preferences in order [1 - best, 6 worst]:
1.Sennheiser HD-600
2.Beyerdynamic DT-880
3.AKG K701
4.Sennheiser HD-650
5.Beyerdynamic DT990
6.Grado SR-60

Using the Sennheiser Equinox replacement cables for the 600 and 650, here are my preferences:
1. Sennheiser HD650 [using Headroom Max amp and Onkyo CD player]
2. Sennheiser HD600
3. Beyerdynamic DT880
4. AKG K701
5. Beyerdynamic DT990
6. Grado SR-60

Headphones using all options [1- very poor, 5- average, 10 - exceptional]:
Bass [combination of power, extension, detail, and quality]:
650:9.5
600:8.5
880:8
990:8
AKG K701:7.5
SR-60:7

Midrange [smoothness, neutrality, detail, openness]:
650: 9.5
600: 9
880: 9
701: 8
SR-60 :7.5
990: 7

Treble [extension, openness, smoothness, neurality, detail]:
650: 8.5
600: 8.5
880: 9.5
990: 8.5
701: 8
SR-60 : 7

Soundstaging:
650: 9.5
600: 8.5
880: 8.5
701: 9.5
990: 8
SR-60: 6.5

Strengths:
650's with Equinox, Headroom Max amp, Onkyo DX-7555 CD player: Simply outstanding in my opinion! I never dreamed the 650's could ever sound anywhere near this good!
I went from wanting to sell these to never wanting to let them go!
Exceptionally balanced, smooth, full bodied, excellent timbre, NO SIBILANCE, WIDE spacious soundstage, remarkable detail, and openness, with no harshness, organic, natural, extremely refined, incredible bass and mids, detailed and open top-end. Wow! I feel that there is probably no limit to how good these cans could sound with the proper amps, sources, and cables!
My new reference by a good margin!
So far best sound amp wise, has been with the Headroom Max. IMHO, it sounds better than the Creek, Heed, and the MF X-Cans v3 that I used to own.
But... with the STOCK cables and using the Creek or Heed amps, several of the other phones surpass them, and they sound muddy, too laid back, slow, bass heavy, and rolled off on top.

600's: When using the Equinox cable and Headroom amp, the 600's almost equal the 650's, but not quite! The 600's still have a very small tad of grain, and a slight thinness to their sound, but they still sound exceptionally balanced, smooth, detailed, and have great bass and top-end.
In their stock form, I feel that they are the best balanced of the bunch.

880's: Remarkably neutral, except for a emphasis in the top-end, and a very slight thinness to vocals. I feel that they have more bass quantity than the 701's.These are extremely detailed cans, especially on top, very neutral midrange, and bass range, great soundstage. I really enjoy these cans.

701's: I have a love/hate relationship with these!
Some days I like 'em, some days I hate 'em.
They are remarkably detailed, revealing, and have a great soundstage, but...
to MY ears they sound a little TOO detailed and alittle peaky in the upper mids/lower treble. They can be very hard on my ears, sonically, and with some music I have they are very harsh! Sometimes they sound much more harsh and grating than the Beyerdynamic DT880/990. Its not burn-in either.
They have about 600 hours on them. And this is using a wide variety of amps and sources. They do sound very balanced form the mid bass up to the middle midrange, and in the top-end. But there is that annoying little peak in the uppermids/lower treble that keeps rearing its ugly head at me!

990's: These are ok, but they do not really suit me tastes. They do have some really strong points such as dynamics, punch, and energy, but at they same time I feel that they are slightly too boomy in the bass, recessed in the mids, and alittle overemphasized in the highs.

Grado SR-60: Sound really good for the price, but they also sound ENTRY LEVEL in my opinion, compared to the other ones.
Good bass power and punch, but a tad boomy and lacking in low bass extension. Really good midrange qualities, and a very detailed slightly forward midrange, good highs, but they lack ultimate extension and air. For the price though: Exceptional!

Best sound Amp wise:
650 - Headroom Max
600 - X-Can v3 or Headroom
880 - Creek
990 - Headroom Max
701 - Heed
SR-60 - Creek
Still waiting on my HeadAmp GS-1!

Amp wise:
Top end extension: Creek
Treble detail: Heed/Creek
Lack of grain, harshness: Headroom
Midrange detail: Headroom
Bass power, punch, detail: Headroom
Blackness between notes: Headroom
Soundstaging: Headroom, sometimes Heed.

Amp build quality:
1. Headroom Max...remarkable!
2. Musical Fidelity X-Cans v3
3. Heed CanAmp
4. Creek OBH-11

Comfort:
1. Beyerdynamic DT880/990 [tie]...simply the most comfortable!
2. Sennheiser HD600/650 [tie]
3. AKG K701
4. Grado SR-60
Enjoy!

daltonlanny,

Hey, thanks for your efforts!

I've had the Creek and MF amps, have the 600 and 650, and have had the AKG 701, and I agree very much with your conclusions.

I've spent a lot of time and effort trying to do better than the 650, and would like to, but I can't. They scale upwards remarkably. It's like there's no end to how good they can sound - until you run out of money!

One thing is certain - people who hear them as slow or veiled aren't doing something right..................

greggf,
I agree totally!
The 650's have virtually unlimited potential.
The Equinox is simply remarkable, IMHO.
I have never heard such a remarkable improvement, whether it be source, amp, interconnect, etc.
For a long time, I felt the 650's were muddy, slow, veiled, too bassy, and too laid-back, but my Onyko DX-7555 Cd player/Straightwire Concerto IC/Headroom Max/Equinox combo has converted me to a 650 BELIEVER!
Can't wait to try out the HeadAmp GS-1!
I cannot imagine how good the 650's would sound BALANCED, and with State Of The Art sources, amps, and interconnects!
Before the flames begin, please remember that these are My findings with MY tastes, My equipment, and with My ears, and with My hearing. Others may totally disagree with my conclusions...to each his own.

Hey daltonlanny!! What a great summary!! One of most interesting threads for me here in loooooooong time!! Can i use a bit of your assistance? Here's my situation: for almost whole 07' i can't decide what headphone to buy. Basically i'm deciding between 600,650,880,990. I've planning using them with my Denon dcd-1015 cd player (around 500$ in 90's) and EC Lunchbox tubeamp (around 200$). Currently i'm leaning towards 600, maybe 650 because i kinda like their smooth presentation and don't know what to expect from 880 or 990. I don't want to go thin on low end (880) or getting pierced by highs (990). But i still don't know... I realize that my system in whole is no match to your. While my CDP is virtually in the same class as your, my amp is in whole another(lower) league than Headroom's max... So i'm afraid that with my system 650 will sound Quote:

with the STOCK cables and using the Creek or Heed amps, several of the other phones surpass them, and they sound muddy, too laid back, slow, bass heavy, and rolled off on top.

So any tip from you will be very appreiated..
Money\value wise, i can get 880\990 for around 190$, 600 for 290$ and 650 for 320$.
P.S. Are 600 & 650 really made of carbon fiber??
