I wasn't that impressed with the Grado SR60...

Grados are the farthest thing from neutral you could probably come up with...if you're going to be mixing, would a studio 'phone, like the AKG k241, make sense? Most studio monitors are so neutral folks think they're "boring" or lack bass, but mixing and whatnot is exactly what they're made for.

"Brickwalled" == lack of soundstage, maybe? Grados certainly don't have expansive soundstages.

Yeah if I was going for Grado's I would be going for the Alessandro MS-1's. Is airy good for mixing? It doesn't give a false impression of stereo width does it?

As for amps, I've got a Mackie 402VLZ3. Their most basic mixer, I think it has 500 ohm impedance, so that should be fine right?

I recommend you to try them first at the shop,it's impossible to know if you like the tonal balance unless you listen to them! And try as many as you can.

I will have a go though. I must dash anyway, have to be up in 6 hours. Not that I can ever sleep anyway!

Thanks all for your input, especially you Chrysoberyl, some sound advice there

Good night!

Do not worry, you will find something. I could not believe how much I disliked the Grado 60s. Lucky the store gave me credit when they came back for a return.
