heh, I meant that to be taken as humour, but it is something for the thread starter to consider as he is thinking about using his hard drive based player as part of his home system. A digital out is ideal for this as he can then hook it up to an external DAC and have a very nice source. Quote:

It might be possible to convert a docking port or something similar into a digital out, but not a line out as it is an analog signal at that point.

I've had a good time with both the iPod and Karma. Both are fine players in their own right. As for the WAV issue, it(the Karma) does handle wav but I much prefer either FLAC or VBR MP3 APE. As for battery, I've gotten just shy of 12 hours with the volume set at 15, the eq active, profile indicators, countdown and back light. That's 12 continuous hours. All my music is vbr mp3 ape.

The NJB3 is a beast, no doubt about it. Two line outs and digital out, large capacity (and because they use standard laptop hard drives, you can swap the existing one out pretty easily, I have a 60GB in mine), pretty decent battery life. However, it is big (the size of a small PCDP, but a bit thicker) and it does not play FLAC or Ogg or any of those. Still, in terms of sound quality, it is one of the best. I carry around a large META42 amp anyway, so the size of the player doesn't bother me. For sheer power, this is one of the top dogs. Its headphone out can drive my ER-4S (100 ohms) to acceptable volumes without distortion, although I would definitely buy an amp to take advantage of its line out(s).

EDIT: It has a parametric EQ, but no gapless support with the latest firmware. The earlier firmware versions do support gapless playback, however.

If powerful is what you're after, rio karma are the only 2 words you need to hear. Gapless, FLAC/OGG, 5 band parametric EQ, rio dj, anything else. Not forgetting the superb SQ.

karma is a very capable player, on par even with the much newer units from Apple, Creative, iRiver, etc. its great for home system use, as the RCA jacks on the dock is perfect for connection to a receiver, etc. but, what it lacks as a line-out player is "portablility" use. as far as i'm concerned, there aren't any portable line-out adapter for the Karma as of now, so using its line-out for a portable rig might be a problem. this is where units with portable line-out abilities like the iPod and iRiver come into play.

The digital is a line in not out. But I still luv my JB3s. I have an 80 gig drive in one and my 100 gig drive for the other is supposed to be here next week. It took over a month to get that drive so far.

A beast I don't think so! Like a thick portable cd player at about 11 oz. That is loaded with 10,000 tunes. (15,000 max. but still weighs the same
