I too hate iTunes, but I use it. I just sort of put up with it. Most software irritates me in one way or another. I just assign an app to a point on my "suck scale" then get on with my life.

Umm I'm pretty sure rockbox works on 5th gen Ipods, or are you saying you don't want to rockbox it?

I have to use the ipod firmware to keep the car controls working.. bleh

Unfortunately, the rockbox community really doesn't seem to be taking much interest in a port for the new iPods. There hasn't been any discussion about it since the 11th, and the moderators seem to be saying that no one is even going to bother because they feel its too hard or something. I'm pissed, I can tell you...

I think the mods/developers there play more of a support role than the actual gruntwork. It's up to the users to do the teardowns, hacking, etc.

Well spoken!
I find iTunes on Mac OS X to be a lot better than the MS Windows version. Its simply running much smoother...

As above, why not? That's what I did, never had itunes on my PC.

Put the ipod into hard disk mode, connect to PC, load Rockbox, drag and drop music. Done.

The problem with Rockbox is if battery runtime is a concern. I thought I could live with it but I just got fed up with it.

The ONLY reason I folded and put iTunes on my PC is gapless playback and ALAC. Going back to Apple's firmware and retaining lossless gapless playback I was forced to install iTunes. dbPoweramp's conversion to ALAC is problematic during playback on iPods - song get skipped.

If dbPoweramp ever solves the skipping problem or Rockbox finally finally resolves battery runtime issues, I'll jettison iTunes faster than you can say FLAC!
