Do you have headphones? If you do and have $500 to spend, I would say get a headamp pico. If not get a E-mu

Have you ever considered a Non-Oversampling DAC? They have a sound all of their own, a good innexpensive example is the Lite DAC-AH.

What headphones are you planning to get?

Depending on your headphone, you might need a headphone amp. (Though you'll want one eventually)

If that's the case, you might want to concentrate on your amp, and get a budget USB DAC/transport.

Alternatively, you could get an all-in-one, which would also work considering your budget.

Agreed. I have an 0404 usb and it sounds great. And if you have any leftover money buy an amp.
