iTunes have one major advantage over most other audio players -> It is available for both Mac OS X and MS Windows.
Unlike Foobar2000, WinAmp, MediaMonkey, Play, Cog, and others who are limited to just one of them.

To each their own of course!

Songbird works on both, as well as Linux distros. And Jajuk works on both, as well as Linux distros. Jajuk also has the additional benefit of supporting WMA files on the Mac, whereas Songbird does not.

I was recently looking for a cross-platform player for Win/MacOS/Ubuntu that supports MP3/WMA/Vorbis, which how I found Jajuk.

I think we've established now that iTunes on PC is horrible, whereas iTunes on Mac is good.

Or rather, iTunes on Mac is essentially the only option, which doesn't say anything about its quality.

You got a point there. However, roebeat above mention that Songbird works for Mac.

Then we've established that iTunes isn't good at anything that it does. Kind of like RealPlayer.

iTunes works fine for me. All music on a 1TB QNAP NAS drive with 3 separate iTunes user accounts on same PC all with own unique playlists & star ratings.

The full two way sync of Star ratings, play counts, play dates etc. Is what keeps me to iPods/iTunes. Not found any other device that does it as good as I make heavy use of Autoplaylists based on Star ratings & play information (usually rate/re-rate tracks on the iPod)

Pros:
+Genius feature was nice, tho it takes a big library for it to work well
+Free like the flu

Cons:
-no way to have iTunes manage folders of my choosing
-no way to sort by album artist in the main column picker
-extremely limited and boring GUI
-runs like poo
-installs unnecessary crap
-app sync/management on a touch was very annoying
-getting album art a hassle
-doesn't come w/ flac playback or encoding

I like the touch and probably would enjoy an iPhone provided reception was ok, but I'm a die hard iTunes hater.

At first I hated iTunes but now I love it since I switched to Mac. It works perfectly with my iPhone 3GS and there is no reason to have multiple codec support to do the exact same thing. The only problem I see is for those who don't use Mac and their format of choice is not supported. Call me crazy but I only use AIFF for everything except for the occasional vinyl free digital download. No need to compress when storage is so cheap now. I could care less if my entire collection is on my iPhone. As long as I have a few albums that sound good for the day I'm satisfied. And yes I did use a rockboxed iRiver H140 using FLAC with dac and amp at one time but it was the biggest pain ever compared to now.

Nobody has listed any differences. As far as I can tell, it's only performance related.

Well performance means a lot. I don't think there are too many differences in them alone. It's mostly expandability and customization issues.
