At an electronics shop. I took my rig with me (ipod + alo dock + LDM+) and hooked up with the HD650 and the K701
I know that my little amp is an insult to such high-end phones, but I had to try!

In comparison to my HD595 the HD650 felt fuller-bodied, with more bass response, and with a more intimate, lush sound, I listened only a few minutes but I liked what I heard even though it was not properly amped.

The K701 was maybe even a little harder to drive, but I did not like what I heard at all: it was VERY clear and neutral, but it sounded dry, thin and distant to my ears.

I know the K701 changes quite much with burn-in but the out-of-the-box listening was really unpleasant.

I think I might go for a HD650 in the future, obviously together with a beefier amp, maybe a RSA Hornet.

I love the Senn sound too! I owned a K701 but returned it. Even after a couple hundred hours' burn-in, it was still too dry and lacking weight.

Everyone's different; thank goodness the headphone community is so well served these days, with so many different sounds to choose from!

I have a whole set of Senns, and I think the 650s make great all rounders. The 595s were my first choice for all rock and some classical, but now I'm really rediscovering some rock songs with the 650s.....bass and treble extension I never knew existed!!! Perfectly balanced cans to my ears, while still staying musical.

my experience with 701s and Ipods was that the Ipod does not have enough
power to properly run the AKGs...not even close. It does sound rather mediocre\
with an unamped source. These are power hungry cans and a good Heed or
H5 is needed for them to shine. I have no experience with 650s.

Senns line up and their 650 does sound better than the AKG-701s with the ipod + alo dock + LDM+ downstream no doubt.

another vote here for the senn hd650. i had both at the same time and ended up keeping the hd650. the k701 sounded thin and boring to me. maybe my woo3 didn't have the right synergy with the k701 but it pairs so well with the hd650.

I remember when I owned HD595 and then took Rega Ear and HD650 from local audio shop for audition. I needed only few hours and there was no turning back. I ordered HD650. They were simply better in every aspect.
