I got a pair of Sennheiser HD518's today as an upgrade for classical music from my M50's but surprisingly my M50's seem to have a wider soundstage and the 518's have better bass...? I feel like this should be totally opposite.

It might depend on the music you are listening to. If the "bass" you are hearing is actually upper bass/mid-bass in the 400 Hz area, then the HD518 would appear to have more:

Bass is frequencies under 250hz.

Anyway the seal on your M50 may be off. Closed headphones in general may not be for you. With the HD518 or any open cans you don't need a great seal at all.

Try pushing the M50 closer to your ears.

lol - yup I meant "upper bass/mid-range". The separation between the response of those two 'phones starts at about 150 Hz. By 400 Hz, we're talking about a 7 dB difference - that's a lot.
