okay, I just got up from 23 hours of non-stop sleep...

Trust me, I deserved it.

However, one things occured to me: Sometimes, when i close my eyes, I see these weird shapes and shadows that play around even though my eyes are closed. They're sually dark blue or neon green too...

I've asked a few people what they are and apparently, I'm not mad, other people ahve them too. We just dont know what the hell they are! Anyone have any ideas?

I can see my blood cells flowing through my veins in my eye lid if I close my eyes and concentrate hard enough. Its prob what you are seeing.

I've seen these my whole life. It's debatable whether I'm insane or not though

I've also had similar occurences before but I dont think they're red blood cells. What I see is something that looks a lot like phytoplankton! Long strands of them too! And when I blink, they kinda swish around! Its actually kinda cool sometimes!

Wow, I sound real looney...

Anyoen else see similar things or can offer any explanations?!

the long strands you see are commonly referred to by eye doctors as "floaters" I didn't really notice them a whole lot until after I had lasik surgery. they are mostly just annoying, but they are also more common the older you get.

Oh my god....I'm still young though....

*imagines hordes of invading "floaties" totally obscuring vision at the age of 65....*

my eye doctor said it is not uncommon for younger people to have them, they just become more noticeable as you get older, but the good thing is that they come and go. they do not become a permanent fixture in your vision.

steeleblayde, if you sometimes see strands/clumps floating around that sort of dissipate after a while, what you are actually seeing is a haemorrhage of the eye. The floating stuff is blood inside the vitreous.

The reason why I know this is because I experienced the exact same thing through childhood thinking it was just junk floating on the surface of my eye...until one day in volleyball practice during highschool, where I had a massive retinal haemorrhage that completely blocked the vision in my left eye. Sort of scary, to say the least. It eventually cleared itself up after a few weeks, but it turns out I have a arteriola loop (a kink in an artery) that has a tendency to burst under pressure. Nothing I can do about it either, unless I do laser surgery and lose 50% of the vision in left eye...yeah right. I'm just supposed to be careful about not putting myself in positions that increase the blood pressure of my eye.

Anyway, don't be too concerned if you see just trace amounts; my case is extremely rare. But if you see this often, or in large amounts, you may want to consult a doctor - specifically a retinal specialist.

Jeez Jim...thats really scary!

I have to admit that it's a very rare occurence for me, but having so many of those blood strands that it actually blinds the eye....that is pretty terrifying! I cant help visualising that and getting the shivers!

I'm glad it cleared up for you though! And I thought it was just gunk on the surface of my eye too! EEK!

Actually, I forgot, regular "floaters" seen by most people are probably just protein strands, not blood. They look quite similar, though strands of protein are a bit more "webby" in appearance, as opposed to clumpy strands. (sorry for vague description, obviously I'm not a doctor!) Anyway, I didn't mean to scare you, normal floaters are annoying, but nothing to be worried about.

I had a strange problem with white flashing in the right eye last year...The flashing got more and more prevalent and spread to affect much of my peripheral vision from 10:00 to 3:00...i finally had my eye checked by an ophthalmologist and it was determined i had a detaching retina which was obviously spreading fast...had laser surgery which "spot welded" the retina back on the wall of the eye...the laser was quite painful at times (and extremely bright like a camera flash going off inside my head) and to make things worse it would fire like a machine gun sometimes which felt like someone poking your eye with a needle rapid fire...Not Fun...If your experiencing something new and changing i would strongly advice having it checked out asap...

I have this problem too! I never talked about this before because it isn't a big problem as long as don't concentrate on it when it is dark. I also didn't want people think I am crazy.

Actually, I had something similar as well. Mine doesnt happen often, in fact it only happens at night it seems. Except what happens is: before i go to sleep and the room is dark, and I have my eyes closed, when I suddenly open them, I see these flashes that fade away, then I close my eyes. If I open them again, I see the flashes again, which dissapate once more. Very strange! I dont think my retina is coming loose though....it happens rarely and I dont think its spreading.... whew!

All this talk of retina's detaching and eye balls filling with blood is really getting scary! Not to mention, it seems I have alot of weird things going on with my vision at night!

Theres a bunch of other stuff that happens to my sight that I havent mentioned as well, but most of them are pretty rare and some of them I dont even get anymore. I suspect my eyes are really messed up....

It could possibly be just noise in your visual neurons. There is always some base level activity in your neurons. When you have little input (your eyes are closed, or it's really dark) you sometimes "see" the noise as something in your visual field. It's like a false positive response or hearing a slight static in an amp with no signal that goes away when you turn on the music. It would make sense that they are blue in color because the rods in your eyes are more sensative to light then cones and they targeted around the blue wavelength. Unless you are seeing them all the time or they are interfering with your normal vision, I wouldn't worry about it.
