I have a Sony EJ 1000. There are a number of nice things with that model - the EL remote, the charging stand, and optical out (via an optical cable put into the headphone jack).
I got a pretty banged up one on ebay and I've filled in the scratches with automotive putty and now I am going to paint it.

I use the Clatronic CDP537MP3 Portable CD player. Battery life isn't the best but it's line out is very good. I had to import mine from Germany though..

buy a pcdp with an optical out and a portable dac instead. so you can expand later
