I Connect my Ipod, then it automatically Ejects?

For some reason when i connect my Ipod to my laptop it says "Connected" for about two seconds and then it says "Ejecting".
Ive got the latest gen 80GB.

I did just move my Itunes library (all of "My Music") from my laptop's internal hard drive to an external-could that have done something?

You have iTunes set to auto-sync with the iPod, and it don't find any music and eject right away.

When I got my 2nd Generation 10GB iPod (whoo-hoo!) five years ago (light years in DAP time), the concept of auto-sync caused a lot of confusion for a day or two. For me, anyway, auto-sync is not an attractive feature, although I can see how some users would like it.

So turn auto-sync off. I never use it, as I would hate to accidentally lose all my data or have it replaced if something happened to my library.

I have it set to manual sync-not a big fan of the auto feature myself.
It wont even register my IPOD and bring it up on screen long enough to allow me to check if its set to autosync.

* Which OS are you running? Mac OS 10.5, MS Windows Vista, ....
* Have you tried to put the iPod into 'Disk mode' then connect it to your computer?

Brand new cable...
Im on Windows XP.
Dont think I know what "Disk Mode" is.

Someone with knowledge about iPods on MS Windows might have some other suggestions, as I am a Mac user...

What about trying a different USB port? I know that sometimes it's hard to get a good connection using a keyboard port (on a desktop PC) or a USB hub, for example. Are you running your laptop off of wall current, or are you using the laptop's battery? Could that be a factor in some cases?

And what about the iPod's battery charge? If it's very low, that could be the problem. Can you charge the player a bit and then see what happens?

And yes, I definitely keep auto-sync off ...

And if you haven't tried rebooting the iPod, definitely try it. (Hold down the menu button and center button at the same time for about 5 seconds until it reboots)

Ok guys,
I rebooted the IPOD and this worked!
However, now its syncing at a SUPER SLOW speed-reminiscent of a USB 1.1 connection.
Mind you, I have the iPOD plugged into a PCI card with two 2.0 USB slots in it, since my laptop only has 1.1's.
It has worked like this for years though; do you think that maybe my card is broken?
How do you troubleshoot this thing?

I've had this happen a couple times. I notice it happens when I accidently bump the cable. Pushing the cable firmly into the iPod again worked.

I also had the problem 1.1 speeds, only with the iPod Classic. I'm using Vista not XP. I un/reinstalled the USB card driver and that worked.

Great to see that you got it all up and running again.

Guess the firmware had some kind of hang, which prevented the iPod from mounting on the computer.

Wow, glad that worked for you. My name is iPodPJ afterall (even though I'm not into portable audio anymore, but unfortunately I can't change my screen name). I would have just assumed you tried that already.
