if you've got a good amount of cd's get a dedicated player. You can just place it under your laptop and use it sorta like a stand. Thats what im doing now. i find the sound quality for a standalone player much better than itunes, no matter which rate you copy it. Thats just me, it might sound the same in your system. I also got a 320gb harddrive and keep most of my music in that. Get a western digital one, they are really good. Best of luck.
