This one was news to me -- Amon Tobin is one of my favorite musicians, and out of nowhere he decides to jump into the video game music scene with this one. The game itself isn't being released for more than a month, but the CD "Chaos Theory: Splinter Cell 3 Soundtrack" was released today, with ten tracks by Tobin. Supposedly he scored a couple hours of music for it, then put a decent chunk of it in one LP.

Anyone heard it?

No way! That is truly bizarre.

I guess a game soundtrack does offer a fair amount of creative freedom combined with a pretty nice, guaranteed pay day and a chance to expand your audience. It really is a pretty sweet deal when you think about it.

It seems like a lot of suprising people are doing soundtrack work right now. Massive Attack did the Danny the Dog soundtrack (and there was talk that they might do another soundtrack after that) and a friend told me that Geoff Barrow from Portishead is doing a soundtrack as well.

Yes and BT scored Monster. One of Orbital's head men wants to score films as well.

Amon Tobin's music has been used in a couple commercials...I can't remember exactly which ones...but they ran last summer. I saw him live years ago, Bricolage my fav. album of his.

Had the chance to hear this, and it's a solid album. In an interview Tobin mentioned that the tactical aspects of the game required a dynamic soundtrack that could change pace and mood in an instant. I'd say that he certainly succeeded if the tracks on the album are any indication. Good stuff.

For those of you who've listened to it, how does it sound in terms of production?

How pristine is the recording?

(I'm asking because some Tobin records can be a tiiiny bit disappointing in terms of crystal clear sound; Tobin acknowledges that himself saying "frequencies sometimes clash".)

Heard a little of the sample on iTunes...

It wasn't the genre that I'm accompanied to, but I imagine that the music is perfect for the game...certainly sent chills up my spine
