Hey guys just want to stop by and say that theverge review for the htc 8x mentions that the beats eq can be turned off. However, I think we haven't really talked about the major audio functionality of the 8x which is the better headphone amp. The htc 8x also gives more voltage to the headphone jack (2.5 v rather than the avg 1.2-1.7) which means it might be perfect to drive some of those tougher headphones. Any one given it a try yet? 
 
The onex doesn't have the more powerful amp inside so it's not going to be a fair comparison .

The review doesn't state whether "Beats off = flat" though. Also, more voltage should be for higher impedances, right? That's my really basic understanding of it.

The review I linked to had this table ( http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/10/test-one-raw-data600.jpg ). That seems to suggest to me (someone with little knowledge on the subject)  that beats off is not flat at all.

I am not entirely sure, I think the answer would be no?,since there is alot of lower ends one, or those manufacturer skipping OTG, according to some people Android 4.0 devices SHOULD have USB audio, but the Dac compability is still very messy and there is alot of custom manufacturer rom without support for some dac

According to this site, the only phone between the Lumia's 820 & 920, and HTC 8X & 8S that supports USB-OTG is...... the Lumia 920.

its more likely to get DAC support as a part of a custom rom, although if the nexus 7 is anything to go by, probably yes? the compability is still on the air though, I mean clearly we can't the logic "if X used to work with the older model of Y it will work with Y" because it doesn't, with S3 not working with the Fiio e17 but working with the e7

So, you are saying that the Nexus 7 did have proper support? 
 
I realize that no proper conclusion can be drawn from the current information, but if google added support for their Nexus 7, I am hopeful they will do the same for the Nexus 4.

That is pretty disappointing news. I'd like to be able to use a DAC with my phone.

Most manufacturer are going for more camera oriented updates no? instead of refining the audio process and features, they will always list "Carl Zeiss 16 Mp camera" rather than "Comes with (good DAC brand) DAC"
as for the nexus 7, you have to add in a custom kernel, but that just mean the "feature" is there , it just need a "driver"

I guess to the average person playing 128 kbps mp3s over their freebie headphones, a good DAC is pretty meaningless. 
 
That's what I love about Android. You can always install a custom kernel. I wish it were enabled by default, but I don't mind a little work to get what I want. Is there any reason google doesn't just enable it themselves?

Based on what has already been posted, WP doesn't seem to invested in such things. Of course, it's a new platform, so we can't know what the future holds.

Beats audio is a gimmick. It's basically an eq setting with booster bass and vocals. It's easier to just use a custom EQ, turn up the gain and adjust the eq yourself to whatever setting you want! Sony's new xperia's with Xloud, clearaudio+ and custom EQ's are the best combination for phone audio

My experience with the Cell Phone has been mostly good.  The beats is not what you would think.  The bass is not incredibly heavy in my opinion.  It really enhances the spectrum.  There is a flaw at the moment with audio that I hope that they will fix soon.  It has been posted across the internet but just in case you have not seen.  The sounds cuts out some times and you have to skip a track.  I am thinking it is either beats audio or built in codec not functioning properly.  The OS after all is relatively new and there has not been many updates.  From what I hear they are working on a update right now.  I love the phone. I love learning to make apps for my phone.  I love that it allows for just enough personalization.  Not as much as android but I have always feared the apps for that not being properly encrypted.  Just try it.  Sure you may confuse the people at verizon, sprint or whatever when you whip out your audiophile headphones and listen to what ever you can if there is a way in the store but who cares.  But yeah I am enjoying the phone.  Beautiful and very tough.  Gorilla Glass 2 and in my opinion scratch resistant back. Any questions before you buy send me an email and maybe I can answer it.  The only short coming with it that was not a surprise is there is no added memory and I want ogg support.
