I am choosing between these two DACs. I currently own Alesis M1 Active 520 with Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio so I am looking for some good improvement under or around 150 USD. I want to get maximum from my speakers at this price range. I listen to harder and newer music genres like a metal, alternative, rock. So any suggestions? Thank you! .

I went through the same decision and chose the Audioengine D1, only because it came down to convenience and budget.  The D1 allows me to have my powered speakers hooked up and controlled by the volume knob on the D1 and use headphones.  With the HRT, I'd have to buy an amp with a line out or constantly switch cables, etc.  The D1 I'd say is a decent but not blown away improvement over the headphone out on my mac mini.  I suspect the HRT is the better dac but have never heard it.  I will probably move to it someday when funds allow and I can pick up a matrix m stage or something similar to go with it but for now I am happy with the D1.
