How would I get around not having a "loudness" button on a higher end amplifier?

OK, bear in mind based on what I've ready from you I think our tastes are very different. I don't want to discourage you, or start a battle. We are just different.
No I understand that completely. But your input is still helpful, for example "I didnt like them because they dont have enough trebble", while a negative for you, would be a plus to me :)

Bass was too big and too tubby. Mids recessed. Highs grainy, badly lacking detail, or harmonics Almost no sense of a stereo stage, all just mushed together. Can't play loud at all, the whole thing falls apart. Ebony is better across the board, but still far from good to me.

My un-EQ'd HE-500, HEX v2, HE6SE, and HD-600 (classical only) are far better at reproducing music in a way that my experience says is correct. The Mahogany and Ebony strike me as "fun" cans with giant fat unrefined bass and not much else, and they absolutely will not play well loudly.

That's my clear eyed opinion.

Thank you ^_^ You still make me want to test them, as "fun" headphones are what I am looking for, I need the bass thumping hard enough to drown out the bad thoughts ;w;

Just gotta get them for the right price so that if i hate em i can sell em on.

Sold mine mint + extra pads for $200 about 15 months ago, and that was actually low then.

You should try them, why not? The way I test bass is with double instruments in same freq area - the Wilson recording of Yes "Fragile" has some bits. Have another one that has two cello's and one bass. Also Chesky and Stereophile have some good bass tests. Dead Can Dance.

Oh wow, thats dirt cheap, cheapest ive found is 360 with extra pads :c

I have two albums that I use as my test albums, both opposite ends of the spectrum, PowerWolfs "Sacrament of sin", dark and heavy, pounding music. And stratovarius' "eternal", very bright and energetic. If I enjoy both of them the headphones are great. Powerwolf is nice on the blons but lacking in bass, and strato is too sparkly. So I think ill enjoy those fostex.

If I can find them...
