Depends on your supply. See tangent's bit about D1 in the PIMETA parts guide:

The diode goes across the supply, the triangle pointing to the positive side.

It depends on how you want it to act. If you put it inline with one of the power input lines, it's perfectly reasonable to use a 1N4001. If you put it reverse-biased across the power rails, whether it works well is a matter of how much current your power supply can provide. If you use batteries, count on several amperes for a short time at least; too much for a small diode.

But note that this will reduce your supply voltage by one diode drop...
