It depends on how you want it to act. If you put it inline with one of the power input lines, it's perfectly reasonable to use a 1N4001. If you put it reverse-biased across the power rails, whether it works well is a matter of how much current your power supply can provide. If you use batteries, count on several amperes for a short time at least; too much for a small diode.

But note that this will reduce your supply voltage by one diode drop...
