How to reduce sibilance in DT770 ?

Hello,

I used to listen a lot to dt770 two years ago, and it sounded amazing with no sibilance whatsoever. However I broke that pair of cans, and bought a new one recently but now I hear a lot of sibilance, maybe because I may have damaged my ears by listening to loud music via IEMs during these two years, or maybe because I use my ears to low frequencies (the iem are very dark).

Can I put more cotton next to the drivers to dampen high frequencies, or does it work differently ?

Thanks you for your time.

I think back in the day, some folks would use TP or paper towels.

I use EAPO's Configuration Editor to EQ my DT-770's.

The frequency response of the DT-770 varies a bit, depending on the impedance (32, 80 or 250 ohm), and also the amount of wear on the earpads. These are the approximate EQ settings I'm using for my 250 ohm DT-770's with worn pads though at the moment, fwiw. All figures are approximate.

BASS:
20- 40 Hz - a few dB below baseline
75-80 Hz - a dB or so above baseline
125 Hz - slightly below baseline
220 Hz - a few dB above baseline

MIDS:
400 Hz - near or slightly below baseline
630 Hz - baseline
900 Hz - near or slightly above baseline
2 kHz - a couple dB below baseline
3.4 Hz - a few dB above baseline

TREBLE:
6.3 kHz - at least a few dB below baseline
10 kHz - several dB below baseline (my current setting is about -7 to -8 dB)
11-20 kHz - at least a few dB below baseline

The DT-770 is not a particularly easy headphone to EQ btw, because of the inconsistencies mentioned above. And because the headphones have a rather uneven response in spots, out of the box. So this is not a headphone I'd really recommend for a beginning EQ-er.

I also use a preamp filter in my EQ settings to ensure that the volume of my content is not clipped in the frequency ranges/bands were the dB values are raised above the baseline.

Diyaudioheaven did an article "taming the treble" and it's does work. 2 plies of toilet paper cut into a circle on the driver under the foam works like a comb filter. It's free to try, just put some in the ear cups first and hear the difference if you like it. I have a DT770 250 ohm and the peak needs addressing, either that or APO/Peace to equalize.

It would be nice, btw, if we could see some new raw plots of the 250 ohm version made on HBK's new 5128 measurement rig. I think the only 5128 measurements I've seen so far have been for the 80 ohm version.
