How to properly place studio monitors...

Angled in the horizontal direction towards your ears? Or perpendicular to them?

Either, some have them aiming at you and some "toe in" the monitors. Try both and see which works better for you. I know people that use both, for example I toe in my reference monitors just a bit.

Start off angled in, tweeters at ear level. You want the speakers to be the same distance from you, this is the basic 'Triangle' arrangement. If possible, have the drivers in line with the computer screen, so you could draw a STRAIGHT line from Left Speaker - Monitor - Right Speaker. As they are nearfield speakers, start off about 12 inches to either side of your monitor and then start moving them further out, back towards wall/away from wall, etc.

If they are 'rumbly' on the desk, use some sound isolation underneath (which can also help 'aim' the tweeters).
