I can't get anything higher than 16/44.1 to play on my new phone. I go to the music player and it shows it but no matter how many times I click it, it won't play.

It's a Sony Xperia Z2. First Andriod ever, I got sick of iOS.

In this french review of the Z2, they played 24/96 FLAC files with the default audio player. 192kHz files will not work though.

Sometimes the default music player will play it fine. The "Music" app on my LG works fine with flac. Doubletwist is free and plays them fine. Poweramp will also but it costs money.

Neutron and Poweramp media players are the old favorites of audiophiles for playing flacs on Android. But there could certainly be some new apps out there that do it well too.

you realise that playing such super high res files is a bit pointless on a phone?

As they seem to take up so much space, what is the best and most efficient file type to use. Is it just mp3 at a certain resolution?
I have only a 16 GB nexus 5 for example, with no external storage.

well, aac is a better codec than mp3 but...... (and i know some will totally not agree with me) i would say go with 320k mp3's.

yes aac would be better but i know for me if i have to keep another file for things that flac wouldnt do then mp3 gives you massive flexibility because everything plays it.

Thanks. If I rip to PC using a lossless format and then sync to the phone does the PC sync use the lossless file or do I have to rerip at mp3 320?
