Painting aluminum is hard enough as it is, but the anodizing makes
it worse. Take it apart, find someplace that has a sand blaster to
completely rough up the entire surface, then go to a body shop that
is aluminum certified, and have them prime and paint it with the right
stuff. If it is done right you will end up with a very smooth surface that
will not flake off or chip. Otherwise you will be sorry you ever thought
of painting it.
Two words for you - ETCH PRIMER .This stuff is an absoloute must if you are going to spray ally... Kevin's suggestion is the best though unless you are confident of acheiving a good result.
i like to use vht paint. after sanding down the sucker to the bare aluminum, just paint on some vht brake and caliper paint (it self primes), then bake it on and it will look niiiiiice. just don't do what i did: mix paint types. i have a middle layer that's prone to chipping. luckily, the top layer (which is vht), baked on and it will take a LOT of scratching to even break the surface.
