If Audioholics isn't in it to make money as a business (both through advertising dollars from their website, and through goods sold through their online store) what is their motivation?

Debunk audio snobbery by making fun of the poor saps who spend more than 84¢ on a piece of wire? Or the droves of idiots that think that an LP sounds better than a CD?

Promoting "Truth" one ABX at a time? Gimme a break.

DellaSala wreaks of the same snobbery he rudely attacks. Audioholics promotes snake-oil just the same. Just because they advise you to spend less doesn't mean they don't want you to spend anything. They'll gladly take your money for their overpriced (however cheap & junky) cables.

This once again comes down to the sunglasses analogy. Just because someone sells them doesn't mean that when they tell you they block UV rays, they're lying. . . even if they sell cheap knock-offs and write bitter articles about how the expensive brands don't protect your eyes any better, it still doesn't mean that their claims are false just because they turn a buck on it.

So what kind of sunglasses do you wear?

Please. If people said that they bought high end cables because they liked the style of it, the image, or the prestige of owning one, then Audioholics would probably not exist. It's the claim of higher performance that they're arguing doesn't exist. After all, Seiko doesn't claim that their sunglasses protects more UV rays than the next brand (though if they did, they'd be lying and in the same category as snake oil vendors).

Do people buy Rolex or Phillipe Patek because they are more accurate than a Timex?

If you require ego gratification from wires, there's something seriously missing from the rest of your life.

I would guess that most owners of high end cables own them because they think a certain cable sounds better. To them. In their system. Listening to music. Marketing hooplah or not. Is that damnable? Or ridiculous? Left to subjective preferences and interpretations of the art of music and how its replayed... how is this such a hard thing to come to terms with?

Or ego gratification from an audio bulletin board! Shouldn't you be twiddling some knobs?

I guess it depends on if the cable does actually sound better or if they are just thinking that because they spend a lot of money on it.

I guess spending a lot of money on a vague subjective impression that can't be verified objectively isn't all that foolish. People act on superstitions and logical fallacies all the time. The only foolishness is when they try to pass their subjective sloppiness off as a recommendation to someone else. If everyone kept their placebo to themselves, everyone would be happy. That way, the only person's whose money is at risk is the one benefitting from the placebo.

Please stick to the subject and don't engage in ad hominem attacks.

Thanks

My only complaint is the over emphasis on cables as being the deciding factor in how a systems sound when in truth cables are the last 2 or 3 percent of the sound.

Yup. It's actually ridiculously hard to come to terms with. Just as hard to come to terms with a person who still takes sugar pills every time she has a headache, convinced that it's Excedrin, and even when you tell her that it's a fake pill she keeps taking it (and pays an exorbitant amount of money I might add).
