There may be other newer and better ways but to the best of my knowledge the only (legal) but complicated looking options are to have access to a first or second edition PS3 with the right firmware version (or fw rolled back) and SACD-Ripper - https://code.google.com/p/sacd-ripper/

Once you have the DSD files, you need either a DSD-capable DAC and software such as Audionirvana capable of delivering the DSD info to the DAC,  (or hardware like Sonore Rendu) that can convert DSD to PCM (downsampled?).

Audirvana (and possibly others) play DSD files but unless you have a DSD capable DAC then there's not really any point.

What if i own the lastest ps3 the slim version does it still work?

The third generation, introduced worldwide in October/November 2007 (The Slim?), is the first model that is not SACD-compatible. Probably all future models aren’t either. All models are compatible with DSD Disc however.

Apart from finishing and bundled accessories, the differences between the models are as follows:

(CECHD01 is the type number of the 20GB unit for Europe that was never released)
The 250GB model has type numer CECH-2001B and apart from the HDD has the same specs as the 120GB model (CECH-2001A)
All models feature: BD/DVD/CD drive, HDMI 1.3a, Bluetooth 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and PlayStation1 backward compatibility.

How do I tell if my PS3 plays SA-CD?

Either check the type number against the above table or see if the SA-CD logo is printed on the side of the unit, in between the DVD and Compact Disc logos.

You need an early PS3 and it has to have firmware of 3.55 or lower. This firmware dates back to 2010 so it's not easy to find one. The reason is you have to install custom firmware. This is not a feature that was built in by Sony.

Some fat PS3s do not have SACD playback. The easiest way to tell is the SACD PS3s have 4 USB ports while the rest have 2.

This is the best place read up on it:

W00t, we no longer need an "ancient" PS3 for ripping SACDs anymore since both Oppo and Pioneer BD players are good to go now

Do *NOT* get BDP-180 since that's already confirmed to be *NOT* working at the moment.

Players that can rip SACDs apart from the OPPO and Pioneer models are from Cambridge Audio.

CXU, CD650, CD 725 are all suitable, doesn't seem to matter which region, they work very well.
