if you have no need for the Creative headphone surround sound, then just connect a headphone amplifier to the SB-Z's front speaker jack.
Meaning just skip the dac?

Yep, the SB-Z already comes with a decent (CS4398) DAC chip.
Just set the SB-Z's control panel to "2-channel" and "Speaker".
At a later DAC you can always add an external DAC and connect it the SB-Z optical just.

If I did this, do I just get a male rca to 3.5mm cable?
