Someone earlier posted that I should set the output to -10dbV, but as default that setting were +4dBu...

Why do I still hear distortion in some songs like I did with my audigy? For example in 'Cyndi Lauper - hymn to love' at about 00:53 (seconds) there is distortion (well, less than the audigy) and also at other parts.

At what level should the sounds be in the mixer? It's currently at zero (0).

I don't even know how to change bass and treble, except for in Winamp...

Please tell me what I should think about

I'm a newbie in this area.

WHY DISTORTION?

Do you get distortion at only +4 dBu setting and not -10 dBv setting? If so, that means the high voltage output of the Lynx is overloading the input of your preamp/amp.

The Lynx does sound much better to my ears at +4 dBu setting, though, so an in-line attenuator will help in this case.

If you get distortion at both settings, it's more likely fault with the recording such as way too high recording level or inherent distortions.

At least read the Lynx manual and make sure your player (Winamp) is set to good output settings. I don't use Winamp, but with Foobar, I far prefer the ASIO dll output into Lynx.

Thanks for your replies Jon!

I get distortion at both +4 dBu and -10 dBv. I think the distortion was lower at -10 dBv, but it's very clearly still there.

What are the recommended settings in the mixer? All levels at zero?

If the distortion is only in a few tracks, blame the tracks. Lots of badly mixed music will exhibit distortion when used on good equipment. If you hear distortion in all your music, then there is something wrong with the hardware, if it is only a few tracks, then its the tracks.

levels should be set at 0dB and unless there's a relay circuit switching the gain on the outputs, you should also use +4dBV setting.. do you hear mechanical click when swithing between +4dBV and -10dbV?

this also applies to 1212m/1820/m..

Yes there is a mechanical click when I switch between +4 and -10. Why is that? When I have +4 the volume is very high! I have to turn the volume wheel on X-CAN V3 almost at the lowest

I get distortion at different songs, but not all, here are a few:
sarah mclachlan - angel
tori amos - winter
Enya - I May Not Awaken
bette midler - hello in there
cyndi lauper - hymn to love

Why did someone tell me to use -10 and now glassman tells me to use +4. What is the difference? Thanks for helping out!

it all depends on how is that +4/-10 switching implemented.. in case of E-MU 1212m/1820/m it is plain digital attenuation, like decreasing volume, that way you are not using the converters to their whole potential.. on Lynx, you have CS4396 DACs, these are rated 120dB, if you decrease the volume in digital domain, you will get 6dB worse figures for each halving of volume.. but if the +4/-10 switching is done in analog domain, by a relay switching the gain on output amplifiers, the DAC still get full scale data and retains it's maximum performance, in this case, use whatever suits you best, you are not loosing anything going to -10.. but be sure you are switching only the output level, there is a possibility that the +4/-10 switch in drivers switches both input and output levels at once and only inputs are relay switched, while outputs are digitally attenuated.. seeing the L22 board would help, as well as seeing the driver screenshots..

how do I get more bass? when I use the equalizer in winamp I don't get desired results. I've tried that before with other soundcards with the same bad results. The only way I got good bas before was by changing the bass setting in the windows mixer.

if you don't get enough bass out of your Lynx, the problem is in the rest of your listening rig.. no equalisation is needed for such a good source..

Too bad I recently bought this X-CAN V3... Maybe it doesn't deliver as much bass as other equipment, or maybe it is my senn hd650, which I bought at the same time.

What is an "in-line attenuator" and how does it help me using +4 isntead of -10? I currently run at -10.
